Moss Installation at Furman
Sustainability is a campus priority at Furman University in Greenville, SC, USA. And now, the David Shi Center for Sustainability boasts the first moss garden created for any major institution of higher learning in America. Located along the walking path below The Cliffs Cottage, this moss garden exemplifies the sustainability of mosses and the ability of these amazing plants to tolerate sun exposures and searing summer temperatures.
Literally, this moss garden was installed during a heat wave in upstate South Carolina with temperatures reaching over 100 degrees. Therefore, this moss fairy decided to plant at night under the full moon of July 2010. Mosses featured included Climacium americanum to filter storm water run-off and sun-tolerant bryophytes like Polytrichum, Entodon and Leucobryum.
Supplemental watering for three sessions of 4-8 minutes helped get this garden off on the right foot. And, the Furman garden staff reliogiously followed my instructions to walk on the mosses daily during the initial stages. So... Right Plant, Right Place, Right Foot equals SUCCESS!
