For Innovative Moss Gardeners and Environmentalists:  A Wet and Wild Workshop Transforming Stumps

Workshop Description: Imagine transforming dislocated and upturned tree stumps into works of art by adorning them with mosses and ferns. The result is a natural beauty of impressive proportions. Mossin’ Annie is excited to share this unique opportunity with other mossers and artistically-inclined landscapers. While typical sawed-off stumps left on your property can be enhanced, too, this hands-on workshop offers a different perspective and creative presentation by turning stumps on their sides with the roots splaying out. With historical roots, the stumpery garden concept goes back to the Victorian era when Edward William Cooke first created this type of natural landscape application in 1856 in the United Kingdom. In addition to hands-on activities with the large stumps, each workshop participant will have the chance to create their own forest driftwood work of art to take home. After the workshop, participants will be invited to stroll over to the Mossery and make special moss purchases.

Workshop Leader BIO: Asheville native and internationally-recognized expert on creating moss landscapes, Annie Martin, known as Mossin’ Annie, infuses her passion for mosses with her knowledge of bryophytes and successful gardening techniques. Owner of Mountain Moss Enterprises, Inc., author of The Magical World of Moss Gardening (2015; Japanese translation, 2017), and licensed NC Landscape Contractor, Martin offers consultation services, lectures/workshops, and turnkey moss landscape installations emphasizing the year-round green appeal of eco-friendly mosses. At her Mossery in Brevard, NC, she cultivates shade, sun and versatile moss species for DIY moss gardeners and professional landscapers. Mossin’ Annie advocates the benefits of native mosses as intentional horticultural choices that play an essential role in healthy ecosystems. Through participatory education and professional guidance, Mossin’ Annie will lead participants through an interactive learning process.

Location: This workshop will take place in the parking lot of the Elkhaven Wellness Center, 100 Elks Club Road, Brevard, NC. Please arrive before 9 am to allow yourself time to park. Please park at the back or along the side edges of the parking lot near Mountain Moss’ Mossery.

Level of Difficulty: Participants must be able to stand and stretch in awkward positions while performing Stump transformation activities without special accommodation. This venue is handicapped accessible but the activities could present logistical challenges.
