Sun Mosses Deluxe Sampler Tray

Selected mosses that tolerate partial/direct sun are featured in this Sun Mosses Deluxe Sampler Tray. You’ll be pleased with this collection of various bryophyte types which may include: Polytrichum, Ceratodon, Atrichum, Ctenidium, Leucobryum, Hedwigia, Thuidium and/or Entodon. Exceptional specimens may arrive in sporophytic state.

All live mosses, lichens and native plants have either been rescued from high-impact locations or cultivated in our Mountain Moss Nursery. We promote the use of these plants for LIVE moss projects and sustainable landscapes. Some mosses will come with soil attached while others, particularly prostrate-growing types and mounds, may have very little soil attached to their tiny rhizoids.

Mosses are shipped via Priority Mail through the US Postal Service. Most deliveries occur within 2-3 days. Mountain Moss will assume the costs of insuring your order. Please notify us if you encounter any issues or your delivery is lost.

Each moss tray order is approximately 10 x 20” in size providing at least 1.33 sq. ft. of product. Substrate fabric is included providing easy installation for gardeners and landscapers, if desired. Hard plastic tray may not be included in the shipment, unless specifically requested by the customer.

Make sure to check moisture levels when your moss tray arrives. Fluff mosses with your hands. Rehydrate as needed and keep moist, but not soggy, until planted. If possible, stage your mosses outdoors until planting, rather than inside locations. Air conditioning or heat will dry out mosses quickly, and therefore require more attention to keep them fresh.

Since florists and crafters treat most mosses as dead elements, we discourage the purchase of our LIVE mosses for these types of floral or craft projects. We request that buyers keep our mosses alive and thriving in sustainable landscapes or containers that feature the beauty of live, green moss colonies.

Reindeer Moss – Lichen Tray

Reindeer Moss is actually a lichen, Cladonia rangiferina, not a bryophyte (moss). It makes a dramatic accent with its natural gray-greenish color in contrast with the brilliant greens of mosses or colorful flowers. Specimens range in size from 5-10”. Long-term sustainability is questionable; consider Reindeer Moss as an annual requiring periodic replacement.

Dicranum (Mood) Moss Tray

Dicranum – This soft brilliant green moss grows in mounds and prefers acid soils or rock substrates. Usually it thrives best in shady locations. Called Mood Moss by many florists, Dicranum is known commonly in the scientific world as Windswept or Broom Moss because of the way the individual plants have leaves that curve. Although it can tolerate partial sun, it really prefers shade locations. Be careful of sun spots that occur in micro-habitats and cause center sections of colonies to “burn.” It does not tolerate wet feet or constant moisture. Pine trees provide great canopy cover and they preferred acidic pH. Rhizoids provide little connection to soil so consider this moss for aesthetic rather than environmental reasons.

All live mosses, lichens and native plants have either been rescued from high-impact locations or cultivated in our Mossery. We promote the use of these plants for LIVE moss projects and sustainable landscapes. Climacium (Tree) Moss Tray

Climacium – Commonly called Tree Moss, it gets its name from the fact that it grows in colonies that appear like forests of little trees. Actually, upper canopy of tree moss is much larger than most all other mosses, about .75-1.5” in spread and a height of 1-3”. New growth will be deep green while older growth or colonies in too much sun will be a yellow-green-brownish color. Mature colonies form interwoven mounds that may grow 4-5” tall. Ideal to use for water filtration and storm water run-off. Climacium grows in deep shade as well as partial sun exposures.

All live mosses, lichens and native plants have either been rescued from high-impact locations or cultivated in our Mossery. We promote the use of these plants for LIVE moss projects and sustainable landscapes.

Thuidium (Fern, Log) Moss Tray

Thuidium – This Fern or Log Moss is a fast grower. It is usually bright green but plants may display bright yellow color during a transition phase. When it dries out, Thuidium changes from a lush appearance to dried up looking fern fronds that appear sick or dead. Once hydrated, they change back quickly. It grows on just about every surface from soils to rocks to concrete walls. Thuidium really thrives in the shade but can tolerate sun exposures once established.
