Heterophyllium affine
Heterophyllium affine is a pleurocarpus moss that grows in flat mats on a variety of substrates including asphalt roofs, railroad ties, decaying logs and "cruddy" soil substrates. It has short sporophytes that rise barely one-half inch above the plants. This moss is shiny, dark green to yellowish. In WNC, it is frequently found growing under hemlock trees in the shade. Heterophyllium could be considered a good choice when featuring mosses on green roofs or as a replacement to a grass lawn.
