So many types of Sphagnum live in western North Carolina at various elevations, sun exposures, and moisture conditions. The Sphagnum peat moss industry is significant in horticulture and it is commonly used as a mulch or moisture retaining media. Sphagnum mosses are noted for being 99% bacteria free being used for bandages throughout history.
